Kay Lawrence
Kay Lawrence lives and works in Brisbane. In 2014 she was awarded a PhD in Fine Art from Griffith University for her thesis Material Matters: Contemporary Women’s Work. In her practice Lawrence continues to explore the problematic relationship between nature and culture.
Grounded in a critical framework of feminist theory, her practice posits the embodied experience of nature as an essential aspect of people’s understanding of the interconnectedness that underpins all of Earth’s ecologies. Highly concerned by the capitalist, anthropocentric motivations that have resulted in our current predicament, she uses feminist ideology as a strategy that can positively contribute to a vast array of methods of bringing these issues to public notice. In her practice Lawrence moves from 2D and 3D works utilising digital mediums, drawing, found objects and women’s work to performative photographic statements which reference our anthropocentric society.
